I'm Yamel, the screenwriter for Runaway. The first time I came up with the idea for the story was last year, when the school said we're going to work on music videos for sophomore year. I was on the phone with my friend Delanie, assistant camerawoman, and we were thinking of ideas for the music video based on a couple of songs we know. The song "Young" by Hollywood Undead was mentioned. Our original idea was about a little girl, about 8 or 9, running away from home. We were then told that we couldn't choose our own songs, so our illusion was shattered.
In film class, we started thinking of ideas for our MWI projects. The idea reoccurred and I began building on that idea. When I started writing the screenplay, I began to think that the girls in the story should be teenage girls to make both the running away sequence more realistic, and because little sisters wouldn't run away because of report cards. If they were older, I'd be able to make it seem as if Kaitlin's smugness and overachieving has happened through time, which would make Kaylee bottle up the anger until she exploded one day and decided to run away.
I had to rewrite the screenplay multiple times, correcting the mistakes and getting rid of unnecessary conflict. It was a hard task and I'd get angry anytime I'd have to rewrite it, but I managed to come up with the final copy which I'm much happier with, even though when I was rewriting the script, my original felt better. -
