Final Day of Shooting :D

On Saturday January 22, 2011 We had our last day of filming. It was such an amazing day. But it started with a couple of issues. An accident occurred with the train (which was the actors transportation) So we were so worried. Especially because the one we really needed the important main character was looking like she wasn't goning to make it at all.

However, everyone made it and we left with a bang. Our final scenes were outside scenes and it was freezing out. We worked through it and i believe the film came out amazing. When we shot the last scene and said cut, it's a wrap i was so thrilled, i felt accomplished. The best feeling ever.

Shooting Saturday

This is yet another Saturday that i have given up to create the film Runaway. Most people would be upset that their precious weekend is given up to film all day but not me. I'm dedicated to this project all the way until it's available for everyone to see. I'm so excited to see the outcome. Thrilled!

With the group

Alot of people believe that working within a group is a bad experience, but you have to try it. In my opinion I never really liked working in groups since I was in middle school. So when we had to do it for this project I wasn't excited. After I found out that I would be working with my friends, I felt like the whole situation would be much better. As we went deeper and deeper into the project and the pressure was buildng up with the actors, location, etc. People began to step on each others toes and just did their own thing. This didn't last long because since we were all friends we set aside our differences and just focused on our project. Our group had so much stress that the only way to let it off was by joking around, even though we were joking around we still accomplished everything. The outcome of the groups work is portrayed through our final film.

Learning to work with the camera

I don't have too much experience with cameras, but I knew everything director of photography Salvador Bolivar taught us. Whether it was screen direction or depth of field, I knew it beforehand. I had no trouble with using the camera, but an exercise on rack focus was a bit tricky. I had some difficulty with panning from one subject to another while keeping both subjects in focus. It took a couple of tries, but I eventually got the hang of it. I'm glad I perfected my rack focus, but there was never an instance where we used it on our project. Well, on the first day at least. We might need it for day two, where we're shooting a tracking sequence.

How did I get into Runaway crew

I chose to work on Runaway because I thought the idea for Runaway was a great idea. I wanted to be apart of producing this and making a great idea into a great film. I chose to be Director of Photography and so far I've had a great time working on this project. My team works really great together and everyone is always on the same page. I think its going to come out great.

Runaway Production Day 1

Overall it went great on set. The actors were very cooperative and there were no technical difficulties. Production ran smoothly and we got the shots we needed. Everyone seemed satisfied with the way production ran. I don't know what else to say except that I'm looking forward to having a great second day of production.

Having other people working on my idea

I had absolutely no problem letting other people work on my idea. Truth be told, I'm glad people worked on my idea. The numerous times I had to rewrite the script, I was stuck with thinking of relevant conflict. When I'd have the writer's block thinking of conflict, everyone, whether directory of photography or production designer, they'd all give me ideas to work on. The best ideas came from other people, so the original script is nothing like the final, due to everyone's great ideas. I think group work was crucial to the whole screenwriting process because we'd all help each other out. -

Dealing with actors

Dealing with actors isn't the easiest thing. But luckily my group had actors that actually cooperated, and even helped us during the shooting. Before we had actors our teachers they were telling us that we have to be extremely nice to them or they will just walk off our set.

And I don't think anyone wanted that to happen. When we actually had the actors, we sort of became friends over the phone because I had to constantly call them to give them updates on everything. so when i actually meet them it wasn't as weird as i thought it would be. The experience with being with the actors was actually pretty fun. :)

Idea for script

I'm Yamel, the screenwriter for Runaway. The first time I came up with the idea for the story was last year, when the school said we're going to work on music videos for sophomore year. I was on the phone with my friend Delanie, assistant camerawoman, and we were thinking of ideas for the music video based on a couple of songs we know. The song "Young" by Hollywood Undead was mentioned. Our original idea was about a little girl, about 8 or 9, running away from home. We were then told that we couldn't choose our own songs, so our illusion was shattered.

In film class, we started thinking of ideas for our MWI projects. The idea reoccurred and I began building on that idea. When I started writing the screenplay, I began to think that the girls in the story should be teenage girls to make both the running away sequence more realistic, and because little sisters wouldn't  run away because of report cards. If they were older, I'd be able to make it seem as if Kaitlin's smugness and overachieving has happened through time, which would make Kaylee bottle up the anger until she exploded one day and decided to run away.

I had to rewrite the screenplay multiple times, correcting the mistakes and getting rid of unnecessary conflict. It was a hard task and I'd get angry anytime I'd have to rewrite it, but I managed to come up with the final copy which I'm much happier with, even though when I was rewriting the script, my original felt better. -

Casting???

(Speaking For myself) When you've never worked on a film and you hear the word casting, like myself you might think of something fun, you get to see various actors and audition them. At first it is fun, but it gets very stressful. You have to post casting advertisments on websites first, therefore people can actually come and audition. You sit in this room for hours, actor after actor. It's not horrible, but it isn't really exciting either.\

The worst thing about casting is when actors don't show up :'( However for my group some of our people did show up and everything went as good as we hoped. It also sucks when you have someone come in and audtion and they are excited, however they're not that good and you most likely will not cast them.

The fun part is that you get to see many different and talented actors, who are dedicated and are also fun and cool. We (my team) were lucky to get a very cooperative cast :D

The Beginning.........

The reason for myself choosing this script (Runaway) is for many different reasons. The first reason was because one of my good friends wrote it. That's not the best reason to stick with a project, but that was my first. Later on my real reason became the actual script.

When i was able to read the script and understand it i loved it. I feel that it's very relatable, feeling like you're never good enough, living in the shadow of someone else is something that many people have felt; including myself and that made me want yo invest my time and emotion into the film.
